Foundation Teams up with Scholastic to Create a Listen Carefully Teaching Guide and Lesson Plans for Classrooms Nationwide.

Minneapolis, May 4, 2012 - Starkey Hearing Technologies, a global leader in hearing technology, is excited to announce that the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Scholastic joined more than 1,400 students and teachers this week at Central Middle School in Eden Prairie, Minn., for an educational assembly to mark the launch of the campaign - a national hearing awareness campaign that promotes one simple message: Hearing is fragile. So don't listen loudly. Listen Carefully.

The assembly featured appearances from songwriter and producer Dallas Austin and Disney and Nickelodeon stars Chris and Kyle Massey. Creating an interactive learning experience, numerous students also participated in on-state activities, including a dance competition. Additionally, special guest Starkey Hearing Technologies' Dave Fabry, Ph.D., led a demonstration on better hearing techniques, which included a hearing loss simulation to show students how music would sound to a person with a hearing impairment.

The partnership between the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Scholastic was established in order to reach the hundreds of thousands of young people nationwide at risk for hearing loss. Both entities teamed up to create the Listen Carefully classroom poster and teaching guide to teach students in grades six and eight about the science of hearing while also allowing them to perform hearing-related experiments. The kit also includes an English Language Arts (ELA) activity that integrates sound and onomatopoeia (words that imitate the sounds they describe). More than 7,000 teachers in Nashville, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, Oakland and Minneapolis - St. Paul have already received the physical materials, and teachers nationwide will have online access to download the materials for free at www.scholastic.com/listencarefully

About Starkey Hearing Foundation

Starkey Hearing Foundation is striving to foster greater understanding among individuals and communities through hearing care by focusing on awareness, education, protection and treatment so the world may hear. Hearing loss affects one in 10 Americans, and 63 million children worldwide, yet many do not have access to the hearing devices that can help them. From 2000 to 2010, Starkey Hearing Foundation fit more than 500,000 hearing aids to people in need in the U.S. and around the world. The Foundation has grown that commitment to more than 100,000 hearing aids annually and is dedicated to fitting 1 million hearing aids this decade. In addition to giving the gift of hearing through worldwide hearing missions, Starkey Hearing Foundation promotes hearing health awareness through the Listen Carefully initiative and provides hearing instruments to low-income Americans through the Hear Now program.
