We need to start thinking bigger about Audiology and hearing aids and not limiting hearing aid fittings to Audiologists only. I loved the chart that showed the degree of hearing loss relative to what type of provider/solution will benefit us. I am going to be thinking about ‘Audiology extenders’ and what that will look like in the future.

I learned a few things about the history of AI. However, be advised there are strong opinions in this article that AI is a better “provider” of HHC to the masses than audiologists. A proposed solution for “care”was to let PCPs and AI generated data recommend hearing solutions. There is also a blatant plug for gene editing. Did AI write this article?

I understand the move towards the use of AI in HHC, but I find the whole concept cold and impersonal. Sure, it could potentially increase the number of people with hearing loss served, but it could also turn them off to health care completely. I know many people who refuse to be treated via AI. The concept of genomics being handled by a third party when we are all aware of the numerous "hacks" to digital systems that occur routinely is frightening.

This course covered the topic thoroughly, presented interested points for thoughts, and ways we as HHC can improve. However, I do feel the author ignored/did not really discuss the risks of using AI; he did mention "Finally, it must address privacy and security concerns" but that was the only sentence and he did not elaborate. The course discussed AI as almost flawless, but there are things to consider before completely submitting our information and knowledge onto the "hands" of machines.

This is an eye opener and provides a great blueprint for the future of audiology practice using machine learning, ai client counseling, understanding how genomics come into play for the audiology and what data we will need to have as practitioners. It doesn't take us down the road to immortality but one has to wonder with gene editing if that is where we are headed.
