This annual presentation provides an update on compliance, coding and reimbursement issues, including informed consent, application of credit card surcharges, tele-audiology, use of technicians and assistants, evaluation and management code use in audiology, and managed care updates.

This two-part series will provide important background and guidance for Speech Language Pathologists, Audiologists, Educators and others who serve children whose hearing loss was early identified to help professionals support families to access the services and support that they need for their child. The program will be of interest to both those with little knowledge of the EHDI system and those with more extensive background as we address both programmatic elements and the barriers that may prevent a child from receiving services in a timely manner.

Passage of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) has led to dramatic increases in newborn hearing screening, but early intervention of identified children still falls short, with up to 30% of identified children not receiving definitive hearing testing or intervention after initial screening—a phenomenon known as “lost to follow-up.” This presentation reviews the specific barriers associated with the failure of children to receive timely services, including inequities posed by Medicaid, complex enrollment processes, and lack of understanding by many parents and PCPs of the importance of timely follow-up.

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) 101 will describe the complex system of care that has evolved over the last 22-plus years. This presentation will include an overview as well as new, emerging initiatives and how you can collaborate with your state of territory program.

With recent advancements in technology, patients may experience issues bringing hearing aids into workspaces with security measures in place. Collaboration with the intelligence community and industry has resulted in solutions for this patient population, and the solution as well as ongoing issues are discussed.

This three-part series features leading experts discussing the following topics: World Health Organization’s Make Listening Safe initiative; tinnitus and suicide; and cochlear synaptopathy, sometimes called “hidden hearing loss”. This course was designed to inform audiologists and hearing care professionals on new initiatives and research in these areas that may impact clinical practices and patient care.

This course reports on a project using community-engaged activities to infuse patient narratives into a course on hearing devices. Results showed improved student understanding of the impact of hearing differences, and increased student desire to include community engagement and involvement as part of their career path.

This course is intended for hearing healthcare professionals unfamiliar with the field of Speech-Pathology to learn the basics of this complementary profession.
