TC Changing gears

This will be a slide presentation showing otoscopy photos of the ear, to review normal otoscopic ear anatomy, as well as several common and some uncommon pathologies of the ear as identified otoscopically. (NOTE: for the first 10 minutes there is poor sound quality although the presenter is intelligible, and the quality is corrected at the 10 minute mark).

Screening classrooms to determine if they are in need of more comprehensive evaluations requires equipment often unavailable to the audiologist. This presentation will demonstrate how one smartphone acoustic app might be used for screening and make basic measurement technology available to nearly anyone.

Margolis (2004) and Martin (1990) suggested that retention of audiological information that is presented orally only is limited at best (less than 50%). Of the information that is retained, up to half may be inaccurate. This session will discuss simple, efficient counseling techniques that audiologists can use to improve what patients remember and increase the likelihood that they will follow through with recommendations. The results of a university study assessing one clinical tool designed to improve patient retention will be presented.
