I feel this information is vital for all clinicians to review. There has been misinformation spread regarding this topic that could negatively impact the public's view about hearing aids and the work we do. This helps explain the actual findings regarding the correlation between hearing loss and cognitive decline.

It was interesting to learn that although it makes sense that hearing loss and other sensory deficits may be associated with dementia, there really is no substantial evidence to support this, given the fact that there are other factors which could be also contributing to dementia.

I have several patients who ask about the risk of dementia and I have always told them about the associations of cognitive decline and untreated hearing loss. It is great to see older and current research critiqued in this easily digestible way so that I can better explain to my patients what is most important for them to know about their hearing aids rather than the buzz words their doctors, Facebook feeds, and local news anchors told them.

Finally someone is speaking out about the false information that hearing loss causes dementia. The emphasis is an association, not causation. This has been misused by many hearing professionals to increase sales in older patients.

I found this course to be a bit difficult to understand. There seems to be so much confusion and not definitive answers as to whether hearing loss causes dementia. Very contradictory studies which made it difficult for me to understand. I actually feel less equipped to speak about hearing loss and it's relationship to dementia.

Good to point out that one (hearing loss/dementia-cognitive function) does not cause the other and there is not much research out there saying so. It would be important to treat the hearing loss and make appropriate recommendations to other health care providers for any cognitive decline. Don’t give misinformation

Some of the information was confusing because there were multiple studies completed but who determines if it was a large number or small number in the whole research world?I though small for the ones you referenced BUT then thought (and wrong) that compared to some other research topics it could be large based on home many articles you referred to that were observations of cross sections of the population (thus larger number of people).

This informative report reviews the evidence that hearing loss may contribute to dementia and cognitive decline, and treating hearing loss reduces the risk of dementia. The risk of dementia is higher in peoplewith greater hearing difficulty. Hearing aids should not be promoted as a way of preventing dementia, but rather a lifestyle that is active, engaging, and independent, living to a healthier old age.
