Interesting to think that instead of trying to prove someone has (C)APD, which doesn't have a clear definition of what it entails, audiologists should be using certain testing to help aid and diagnose already proven CANS lesions.

As an Ed Aud consultant to several school districts in my area, I do come across students who have been diagnosed with an APD. It’s always a challenge to decipher the test results and translate them for the other professionals who are working with the student. And in the absence of a peripheral hearing loss, it’s difficult at times to make the case for the use of assistive listening devices. Teachers, parents, and/or other service providers don’t always see the need/ perceived benefits.

I would like the discussion to reflect on our profession more positively for all we have done in APD and not open up a firing squad when we have enough nay sayers already. Ultimately the discussion boiled down to definitions and we certainly CAN structure our testing to support APD “clinical entity.” One way is to discuss the evidence of homogeneous group by subcategories of APD. Herein is a problem with this discussion, there are many types of APD, just like many types of SLP.

It was okay. As a District Audiologist I did a lot of APD testing and the author didn't address some of the key issues that I encountered. Firstly, if you''re testing for APD, you have to know if there is any ADD/ADHD going on. The AAA paper was very specific about that. And secondly, no one addresses one of the very real issues in the school system, which is that school can be really boring, and some students aren't paying attention not because they can't but because they don't want to.

I think written text was the best format for this presentation, because it takes time to read over and digest (although the learner could have referred to the transcript I suppose). I think it was well referenced and provided clarity over the aspirations of those working in the APD field to find results to legitimise a disorder of APD, but how this is hopeful, but not evidence based. The distinction between ICD and Insurance statment was good to know.

This is the most helpful course or article I have read on auditory processing in a LONG time! I appreciate the historical perspective and current rationale backed by multiple resources. This will be very helpful in trying to explain the pros and cons of APD testing in my school district. Teams spend a lot of time debating whether or not it is a stand-alone disorder necessitating a special ed diagnosis, instead of focusing on what we can do to help the child! This info will be so helpful!

Looks like we have work to do in developing a "gold" standard for evaluating and diagnosing APD. In a clinical setting where many people come in with various complaints of difficulty with clarity of hearing etc, it would be helpful to have a standard test battery to determine if APD should be considered.

This article revealed the problem in trying to diagnose APD. It's too ambiguous of a classification. Reading this article presented to me for the first time, the logical approach of diagnosing deficits in specific processing skills that can be measured with gold standard tests and then correlated to patient complaints. The instructor presented this novel approach to diagnosing components of APD which makes sense and is an attainable goal.
