This course presents fundamental concepts for the assessment and interpretation of wideband measures, including a review of acoustic impedance and its relation to the mass, stiffness, and resistance components of the middle ear. The interpretation of absorbance measured at ambient pressure and pressurized conditions (wideband tympanometry) in ears is described using clinical case examples.

Joseph Kei is an Associate Professor, Director of the Hearing Research Unit for Children and a member of UQ Centre for Hearing research at the University of Queensland. He has profound interest in middle ear assessment. He started investigating the application of otoacoustic emissions to children in 1994, high frequency 1 kHz tympanometry and acoustic stapedius reflexes in 2000 and wideband acoustic immittance in 2009. To date, he has published 50 papers in the area of tympanometry and ranked as the second most productive author in this field in the world for all years (Scopus, July 2023).
