Distance Learning Au.D. Program Breaks 500th Graduate Mark

Gainesville, FL (February 2003) - The University of Florida Working Professional Doctor of Audiology Program announced the graduation of its 500th distance learning student. This significant milestone comes less than five years from the program's inception and firmly bolsters its position as the fastest growing and most popular program of its kind in the nation.

Graduating students, some from as far away as Hawaii and California, along with friends, family, and faculty, gathered the evening before graduation at a gala event to celebrate the achievement.

"Graduating over 500 students in less than five years sends a strong, clear message that this program was designed the right way, with no compromises," said Scott Griffiths, Ph.D., University of Florida Associate Professor. "Our curriculum is robust, uniquely designed, academically challenging, and ultimately convenient for working audiologists," said Dr. Griffiths.

The Working Professional Au.D. Program was established in 1998 in partnership with Intelicus, a premier provider of distance education and e-learning solutions. The program was created to meet the challenge within the profession of audiology to transition working professionals to the new Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree. The needs of the profession of audiology are consistent with the University of Florida mission to enhance and expand its graduate education programs. The program currently boasts 18 regional distance education sites across America.

"The best part of the distance learning experience was, one, the opportunity to get together and meet colleagues that have their own specialized areas within the field of Audiology, and two, working with professors and teachers that are at the forefront of the profession," said Peter Sotiropoulos, Au.D. graduate. "The program surely, and unexpectedly, changed the way I practice my craft, treat and manage my patients, and think about disease processes. I would recommend it to anyone at a master's level that intends to make a living in the field for the years to come," said Sotiropoulos.
