The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) welcomes Trinh Ly, M.D., to its Clinical Trials Program, where she will serve as co-director, along with Steven Hirschfeld, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Ly will oversee the extramural clinical trials program, supporting research in communication disorders, including behavioral, device, and therapeutic interventions.
Dr. Ly joins the NIDCD after 14 years as a medical officer for the Division of AIDS, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (DAIDS/NIAID), National Institutes of Health. Within the Complications & Co-infections Research Branch, part of the Therapeutics Research Program at the NIAID, Dr. Ly ensured participant safety and research excellence in international, multi-site clinical trials. She provided leadership and scientific expertise to diverse extramural clinical trials research teams addressing global health issues related to HIV/AIDS and associated co-infections (such as hepatitis C and cryptococcal meningitis) and non-infectious complications.
Dr. Ly planned, implemented, and managed the Comprehensive International Program of Research on AIDS (CIPRA) projects in South Africa, Haiti, Senegal, Thailand, and Cambodia. The CIPRA program successfully established the long-term clinical research capacity necessary to conduct clinical trials in resource-limited settings.
