San Diego, CA – September 4, 2013 – Plural Publishing is pleased to announce the upcoming publication of three audiology titles- Goldfarb and Serpanos' Professional Writing in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Hamill and Price's The Hearing Sciences, Second Edition and Robertson's Literacy and Deafness, Second Edition.
Second Edition Launch of Professional Writing in Speech-language Pathology and Audiology
Professional Writing in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, now in its second edition, is an excellent resource for students of communication sciences and disorders. It is often used as a textbook for courses in clinical methods, introduction to research methods, and professional issues. Throughout the text, the authors use anecdotal material, self-help questions, and humor to illustrate that learning to be a better professional writer does not require drudgery.
For the second edition, the authors have updated the content to reflect changes in the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition, as well as changes in the Graduate Record Exam and Praxis Exam. They also added a new chapter on English grammar. Please note that the second edition also combines the 2009 textbook and the 2011 workbook (along with new and updated material as mentioned above), and substitutes the previous CD with a user-friendly companion website.
The authors cover a spectrum of subjects related to professional writing, including:
- rules of writing
- evidence-based writing
- ethics of professional writing
- use of the library
- use and abuse of the Internet
- writing for oral presentations
- writing diagnostic reports
- writing clinical reports; and
- writing for professional advancement
For the second edition, the authors have updated the content to reflect changes in the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition, as well as changes in the Graduate Record Exam and Praxis Exam. He was a Fulbright Specialist in Applied Linguistics/TEFL in Bogota, Colombia in 2013. He has published in the areas of adult aphasia, the language of dementia, and the language of schizophrenia, and is also co-author of two tests: The Stocker Probe for Fluency and Language (1995) and Time-Altered Word Association Tests (TAWAT, 2013). He edited and contributed chapters to Ethics: A Case Study From Fluency (2006) and Translational Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (2012), and is co-author of Techniques for Aphasia Rehabilitation Generating Effective Treatment (TARGET, 1995), Professional Writing in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (2009), Professional Writing in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Workbook (2011), and Language and Motor Speech Disorders in Adults, 3rd ed. (2013).
Dr. Serpanos, is Associate Professor of Audiology in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program at Adelphi University and the Long Island Doctor of Audiology (AuD) Consortium. She has over twenty years of clinical experience and fourteen years of university teaching experience at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Dr. Serpanos has several publications in the areas of behavioral loudness growth assessment and estimation using electrophysiologic auditory measures, and in preschool audiologic screening.
Second Edition Launch of the Hearing Sciences
The Hearing Sciences, Second Edition addresses all the topics critical to understanding the hearing sciences: acoustics, anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vestibular systems, psychoacoustics, and basic instrumentation.
Written in a straightforward approach, each chapter opens with an introduction of the key concepts and ends with a concise summary. The practical nature of the book is demonstrated in the "Clinical Correlates'' examples, which relate elements of the hearing sciences to patient care and engage students in the concepts.
The textbook is designed for undergraduate students—the more advanced chapters are useful supplementary material in graduate audiology programs—but through this book, students will gain invaluable insight into the hearing sciences before ever taking a course in audiology.
New to this edition:
- New and improved illustrations
- Updated information on cochlear physiology
An added bonus is in the companion website: www.audstudent.com/resources, which contains support and extension activities to help students apply concepts to practice.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS- Teri A. Hamill, PhD, is professor of audiology at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she teaches AuD students. She has been a professor for nearly 25 years and also has worked clinically in a hospital setting. Dr. Hamill developed an interest in digital signal processing and instrumentation circa 1988 during her post-doctoral work with a company that created a (commercially unsuccessful) digital hearing aid. (The processor was the size of a cigarette pack.) She teaches courses in basic sciences, research methodology, and electrophysiology. Dr. Hamill provides content for including review tutorials for text chapters. On vacations, she sails the waters of south Florida and the Bahamas on a lovely 38-foot sailboat, which is “older than her students.”
Lloyd L Price, PhD, is professor emeritus of audiology from Florida State University. He taught for more than 30 years and was Dr. Hamill’s professor during her doctoral studies at Florida State University. In addition, his clinical background spanned more than nine years. Dr. Price drafted early versions of this text for use in his undergraduate classes, and sought to present hearing science information in an interesting and straight-forward manner. Now retired, Dr. Price and his wife live in Havana, Florida and travel, primarily to Europe.
Second Edition Launch of Literacy and Deafness: Listening and Spoken Language
Literacy and Deafness: Listening and Spoken Language, now in its second edition, is intended for speech-language pathologists, teachers, and parents of children with hearing loss. Research shows that literacy levels are generally higher in individuals with hearing loss who have learned the spoken language they are reading. At a time when advancements in technology continue to provide increasingly improved access to sound and spoken language, this book pulls together the dominant research from the “hearing world” and applies it to the world of the deaf and hard of hearing. The author argues that helping a child learn to listen and speak is the best way to ensure he or she will learn to read and write.
For the second edition, the author has revised and updated the content, expanded several chapters, and added four new chapters:
- Reading Aloud with Children
- Creating and Using Language Experience Books
- Music Learning and Spoken Language Development
- Parenting a Child with Hearing Loss
- Where Are They Now? Listening and Spoken Language Outcomes
With its refreshed and expanded content, Literacy and Deafness: Listening and Spoken Language, Second Edition, is a valuable tool for those who wish to help individuals with hearing loss develop the highest possible levels of literacy.

The mother of a daughter with severe-to-profound hearing loss, she has authored one book, Literacy Learning for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and articles about listening and reading.
