Reston, VA –September 21, 2015—The national Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) has planned its first nationwide public awareness event, the “Ask Me About Audiology” campaign, for October 24. This event is being held in conjunction with the American Academy of Audiology’s National Audiology Awareness Month initiative and “Make a Difference Day,” the largest single-day of volunteering in the country.
The SAA is challenging all 60+ university chapters to go out into their communities and raise awareness about the profession of audiology, the services that audiologists provide, and the effects of hearing loss and balance disorders on quality of life. Furthermore, SAA members can increase the impact of this outreach by distributing earplugs provided at no charge to SAA chapters by HyperSound Hearing Solutions, the Academy’s 2015 National Audiology Awareness Month corporate supporter. The HyperSound grant underwrote the Academy’s Myth vs. Facts About Hearing Loss poster and other online resources and tools for use by audiologists and hearing care professionals.
Joshua Huppert, member of the SAA Board of Directors and chair of the SAA Advocacy Committee, led the SAA efforts to get the “Ask Me About Audiology” campaign off the ground. “This project has the potential to reach thousands of people with the healthy hearing message…and it’s extra awesome that we can reinforce the message about hearing conservation by distributing free earplugs during our outreach,” Huppert said recently. “On behalf of my student colleagues from around the country, I thank the HyperSound team for their overwhelming generosity, since each SAA Chapter will now have the Myth vs. Facts About Hearing Loss poster, tools, and complimentary earplugs to share with the public on October 24.”
“HyperSound is pleased to have the opportunity to work with the national SAA and audiology students from around the United States,” stated Brian Taylor, AuD, HyperSound’s Senior Director, Clinical Affairs at Turtle Beach Corporation. “We envision SAA members spreading the healthy hearing message at college football games, local malls, and other university events during this nationwide outreach campaign…and we wish our young colleagues much success in this worthwhile effort.”
