January 10 is the early bird registration deadline for the state convention of SHHH- Self Help for Hard of Hearing people, February 18-20 at Radisson Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Orange County, CA. Co-sponsor is the Cochlear Implant Association (CIAI).
Twelve informative and uplifting workshops aimed at both those who are hard of hearing and hearing loved ones and professionals, will cover hearing loss coping and communication skills, grassroots advocacy, cochlear implants in children and adults, hearing dogs, disaster preparedness and humor. Exhibiters will display and demonstrate the newest hearing assistance technology.
Heather Whitestone, 1995 Miss America, will be the keynote Saturday banquet speaker. Deaf since infancy, Whitestone was the first woman with a disability crowned Miss America. She now uses a cochlear implant.
Other speakers will include Dr. John House, president of the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles and Dr. Terry Portis, executive director of SHHH, from national headquarters in Maryland.
The fees: National SHHH members $100 until January 10 and others $125 (includes 1 yr. SHHH Membership). After that date fees will be an additional $25. Saturday only attendance is $75 (includes the luncheon). Students with valid ID will be $35. Includes Friday night welcome reception. Saturday luncheon and Sunday morning breakfast meetings.
