Elkins Park PA, (August 14, 2012) - James M. Caldwell, OD, EdM, FAAO, has been appointed dean of Student Affairs at Salus University, it was announced by Dr. Thomas L. Lewis, president. He will succeed Robert E. Horne, who is retiring after 36 years at the institution.
A 1989 graduate of Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), Dr. Caldwell completed an optometric residency at the PCO clinical facility, The Eye Institute. He began his career at PCO as an admissions officer;since then he held a variety of positions including director of Student Recruitment, director of Admissions and most recently, associate vice president of Academic Affairs. He also holds the rank of assistant professor.
Throughout his career, Dr. Caldwell has been a strong advocate for students. According to Dr. Lewis, he was instrumental in the process of establishing Salus University, while meshing the goals of academic, student and professional affairs to chart the University's direction and ensure its success. He accomplished this by designing new programs and promoting the University's vision of excellence and innovation to a wide range of organizations including those which provide professional accreditations, and state and regional certifying entities.
"Dr. Caldwell has consistently demonstrated effort, excellence and dedication," Dr. Lewis said. "I have no doubt that he will bring those same qualities to the position of dean of Student Affairs and serve our students well."
Dr. Caldwell earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Gannon University in Erie, PA in 1986. He earned a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from PCO in 1989, a Master of Education (EdM) degree from Temple University in 2005, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (EdD) degree at Temple University.
A member and Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO), Dr. Caldwell is also a member of the following professional organizations: American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), American Optometric Association (AOA), Delaware Valley Association of Collegiate Registrars and Officers of Admission (DVACROA), Middle States Association of Collegiate Registrars and Officers of Admission (MSACRAO), National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP), Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NEAAHP), and Pennsylvania Optometric Association (POA).
Salus University was established by the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) in July 2008. Now the University's founding college, PCO was founded in Philadelphia, PA in 1919, and has long been recognized as a leader in the education of health care professionals.
