Free show, in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, runs through Dec. 16.
For the first time, the Dyer Arts Center at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf will feature the artwork of Latinx deaf artists during the Arte del Corazón exhibit, which runs through Dec. 16. A special two-day opening will be held at the gallery and nearby Panara Theatre, Sept. 15-16. All events are free and open to the public.
A new exhibit at RIT/NTID’s Dyer Arts Center highlights the work of Latinx deaf artists at Arte del Corazón, which runs through Dec. 16. Luz de Luna by Rolando Sigüenza is one of the featured works.
Arte del Corazón features painting, sculpture, photography, films, drawings and mixed media from artists including Claudia Jimenez, Miguel Diaz Calderon, Rolando Sigüenza, Iris Nelia Aranda and Drago Renteria. The exhibit, which will display the works of more than 50 Latinx deaf artists, coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month.

- NTID Presenter Series: Drago Renteria, 7-9 p.m. Sept. 15, Panara Theatre
- Art workshop, 2-5 p.m. Sept. 16, Dyer Arts Center
- Gallaudet University’s Latinx Student Union presents The Glass Wall, 7-8:30 p.m. Sept. 16, Panara Theatre
Exhibition curators are Earl Terry, Leticia Arellano and Roberto Sandoval.
Tabitha Jacques, gallery director, said the show came about following a popular exhibit that was held in 2015 that featured black deaf artists.
“The conversation shifted to focus on Latinx deaf artists since there is a lot of dialogue on the formation of the Latinx Deaf Art movement,” explained Jacques. “Dyer Arts Center has the resources to provide the space for an exhibition that explores emerging themes of the movement. This exhibition is an opportunity to learn more about deaf artists of Latin American descendent, the variations of cultures, and to see, through art, what themes may be important to individual artists and how they are similar or different from others showcased in the exhibition.”
The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The gallery is located in Lyndon Baines Johnson Hall, RIT/NTID, 52 Lomb Memorial Dr., Rochester. For more information, go to www.rit.edu/ntid/dyerarts/
