Annual Competition Honors 100 New Products

WARRENVILLE, IL (November, 2000) - Phonak's Claro™ hearing aid and
companion WatchPilot™, a watch with a built-in remote control that
enables wearers to make discreet adjustments, have been recognized among the top 100 new products of 2000 in Popular Science's prestigious 'Best of
What's New' competition. The instruments were honored in the program's medical technology category.

The result of six years of research and development, Claro is a fully digital hearing computer featuring new technology that dramatically improves
speech intelligibility. It continuously self-adjusts to separate conversation from background noise, locate and suppress the loudest noise source, and eliminate over- and under-amplification. It also automatically
reduces steady-state interference from sources like furnaces and fluorescent
lights, and it adjusts to quiet and noisy environments without any action by
the wearer, eliminating the need to manually change hearing programs.
Wearers have the option to override the automatic feature for telephone
conversations or other situations where they prefer the freedom to choose
their hearing program.

The WatchPilot enables Claro wearers to regulate the instrument's volume and change their hearing program from their watch rather than a control unit.
This frees wearers of the need to carry a separate device, avoids problems
created when a remote control is left at home or in the car, and removes the
risk of embarrassment by making hearing aid adjustments as inconspicuous as checking the time.

The products selected for Popular Science's 13th annual 'Best of What's New' awards will be showcased in the magazine's December 2000 issue. They will also be listed at the magazine's Web site, www.popsci.com.
