P2i's Hearing Aid Success Opens New Avenues into Protecting Mobile Phones from Water Damage

Share:
Abingdon, UK & Boston, USA, 28 March 2012: P2i, the world leader in liquid repellent nano-coating technology, is building on the successful integration of the Aridion™ technology in the Hearing Aid sector to implement the technology onto other electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and head sets.

Approximately 60% of hearing aid devices produced globally are now protected by Aridion™. The ultrathin coating prevents the buildup of corrosion damage brought on by sweat, moisture and liquids. Noting the game-changing benefits, other manufacturers are getting on board, as P2i is in discussion with a number of leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In October, Aridion™ was launched with a major handset manufacturer and is now protecting over two and a half million phones and tablets for this brand.

Dr. Stephen Coulson, CTO, P2i comments: "The Hearing Aid sector has been crucial to the success of P2i as a company. It is in this industry that we have already proven our ability to treat delicate electronics without compromising the functionality, look or feel of the device. With this validation, we haveattracted the attention of mobile phone manufactures and rolled out a full scale high volume industrial process. This continuing research and development will enable us to provide further support to the Hearing Aid sector as we continue to grow in 2012 and beyond."

Aridion™ technology took center stage for P2i at AudiologyNOW! as demonstrations of the technology were presented using tissues. Showcasing the repellent power of the nano-coating, water simply beads up and rolls off tissues treated with Aridion™.

What is Aridion™?

Aridion™ is P2i's revolutionary liquid repellent nano-coating for Electronics. It provides unbeatable protection against corrosion damage, reducing warranty failure and repair costs and ultimately increasing user confidence.

Aridion™ is applied using a special pulsed ionized gas (plasma), which is created within a vacuum chamber, to attach a nanoscopic polymer layer - one thousand times thinner than a human hair - to the hearing aid. This dramatically lowers the product's surface energy, so that when humidity, sweat or oleos substances come into contact with it, they form beads and simply roll off.

Plus, because Aridion™ can coat every aspect of a finished product at the nanoscopic level, it protects much more thoroughly than alternative approaches where individual product components are treated prior to assembly. The result is a truly durable liquid repellent coating that does not affect the product's look, feel or delicate acoustic properties.

About P2i

P2i is the world leader in liquid repellent nano-coating technology. It was established in 2004 to commercialize liquid-repellent treatments developed by the UK's Ministry of Defence. Now on a commercial scale, P2i's patented process has been successfully applied to a wide range of products in a wide range of markets including Lifestyle, Electronics, Life Sciences, Military & Institutional and Filtration & Energy.
