St. Louis, MO. March 1, 2010. Oaktree Products, Inc. a leading multi-line distributor of audiology and hearing aid supplies, accessories and equipment is pleased to support an upcoming parent-teen workshop on assistive listening devices (ALD) for cochlear implants at Rady Children's Hospital - San Diego through a donation of hearing assistive technology.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 at Rady Children's Hospital, and is part of the hospital's 2010 Cochlear Implant Parent Workshop Series. Entitled, Are you Connected? Assistive Listening Devices and Your Cochlear Implant, this session will familiarize teens with cochlear implants and their families with the wide array of assistive technology available. As with all workshops in the series, this session will feature an educational component as well as a hands-on component, and will be conducted in English with Spanish translation.

Alyssa Needleman, Ph.D., Audiology Manager at Rady Children's stated, "This workshop is designed to cover the range of assistive technology available for people with cochlear implants, from devices that make speaking on the telephone easier, to safety equipment such as smoke detectors, to FM systems and multi-alert pagers, and more. The hands-on approach really facilitates learning and interaction, and it's not uncommon that the participants learn tips and strategies from one another as well as from the audiology staff presenting the workshop. We're grateful for Oaktree's donation that helps us ensure a dynamic learning environment".

Audiologist Michelle Hu, Au.D., CCC-A, states, "Teens with cochlear implants want to be independent, but may still rely on their parents and families to assist with some daily tasks such as waking up in the morning. They may not be aware of all the technology out there that can foster independence, accessibility and that can just make things easier and more convenient." Dr. Hu is an audiologist at Rady Children's and one of the facilitators of the workshop. She uses a cochlear implant herself and has personal experience with many of the assistive technologies that will be covered in the workshop.

A.U. Bankaitis, Ph.D., Vice President of Oaktree Products, states, "The best way to learn about the life-changing technology available to people who use cochlear implants is by practical, hands-on demonstration. What is most impressive about Rady Children's Cochlear Implant Parent Workshop Series is not only the informative, interactive curriculum, but also the passion and enthusiasm that Alyssa, Michelle and the staff bring to it. We're honored to have contributed in a small way through our donation."
