On April 13-14, 2010, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) convened a multidisciplinary workshop to discuss children with autism spectrum disorders who have not developed functional verbal language by five years of age. Participants reviewed the current state of scientific knowledge, highlighted critical knowledge gaps, and identified research opportunities to address these knowledge gaps.
The workshop was sponsored by three NIH Institutes: the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
