NIDCD grantee Carol Padden, Ph.D., has been elected Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Padden will receive her award in February 2012 at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada. New Fellows receive a certificate and a blue and gold rosette as a symbol of their distinguished contributions to science and technology. Dr. Padden is a professor of communication at the University of California, San Diego. Her research focuses on the unique structure and evolution of sign language. Last year, Dr. Padden was the first deaf person to receive a prestigious "genius" award from the MacArthur Foundation.
