The following are the latest updates and announcements from Frye Electronics...

1. WinCHAP -
32 bit version now available

Many years ago CHAP (Computer Hearing Aid Program) was developed as a DOS data base to hold hearing aid test data and client information. WinCHAP (v 1.0) in a 16 bit Windows version was then introduced. Now, many months later, version 2.0 (32 bit), a greatly expanded and improved program, has been released. Those with the 1.0 version can get a free upgrade upon request. Read all about WinCHAP 2 on Frye's web site, www.frye.com, or ask for a free demo CD or a new brochure. This program, like many new programs, requires Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT 4.0. A Pentium chip or equivalent is required, 32 Megabytes of RAM and 25 Megabytes of free hard disk space.

The demo CD will store ten files to give you an opportunity to try it out. Converting to a full version is easy. Just contact Frye with the serial number of your demo and you will be given an authorization code.

Frye's programmer is currently putting the complete DSL program on WinCHAP. Many 6500-CX users have been using the University of Western Ontario's computer DSL program and the FONIX Link program to capture and store data from the FONIX 6500-CX. This new program will merge the two programs and simplify the procedure. Frye also plans to put the NAL NL-1 on WinCHAP very shortly. A programmer is dedicated solely to working on WinCHAP. His name is Ercim. If you want to send him suggestions, his e-mail address is ercim@frye.com.

Remember, Frye is more than willing to send you a free demo of their WinCHAP program. Just send an e-mail request and it will be mailed out to you.

2. NOAH Module
Frye has paid for their entry into the NOAH system and will make their WinCHAP program compatible with NOAH 3.0, which is scheduled to be released in October. Those who get the WinCHAP program now will get a free upgrade when the Noah module is added to WinCHAP. One of the advantages of using WinCHAP as Frye's NOAH module is that data can be saved in both the NOAH format and in the more inclusive WinCHAP data base. Being able to sort on a wide variety of categories is welcomed by many users.

3. New Programming for the FP35
Upgrades on FP35 available free
Frye's version 2.0 software for the FP35 is really an improvement in many ways. It is faster and easier to use, and it just plain works better.

The FP35 is their newest unit. It is the smallest, lightest, and least expensive unit that Frye builds. It has two important options, the real ear and the composite option.

It is the first instrument produced by Frye that is upgraded through the RS232 and a computer. A computer disk specific to each instrument for the upgrade will be sent. Upgrades will also include an RS2323 cable (PN 119-003-00) and a new manual. If the unit has been upgraded previously, the cable sent at that time will work. All new FP35 purchases will now include the RS232 cable.

Frye has set out to make the FP35 fully controllable through a computer. Right now you can do any test available on the instrument through a computer or as a function of the stand-alone unit.

Frye's programmer states that they will have the ANSI '96 test sequence available by the time of the IHS convention in early September. If you are coming to the IHS convention stop by and see it.

4. Bargain FP35s available
If you are looking for a real bargain in an analyzer, look no further. A few FP35s are available at a 25% discount. These are demo units that were built about a year ago. They will be equipped with the latest software including ANSI '96 if you wish. They have real ear and composite options and sell for $4125 after the discount.

5. Verification of CIC Option
Frye is pleased to report that their CIC Option, available on the FP40 and the FONIX 6500-CX , has been validated as a useful clinical tool by Steve Martinez, a California audiologist. This research project was done as a Ph.D. dissertation. He used the FP40 and compared results from the CIC Option to real ear measurements. Steve has agreed to write up the summary of his findings for publication. You will be kept posted on where it will appear. As you may know, the CIC option consists of a coupler and correction factors. It is very difficult to look at a 2 cc coupler response and to translate that response into something that is in any way realistic. The CIC Option gets you most of the way there.

6. Coming Up
IHS Convention-
Anaheim, California

Frye will have a booth and will also provide help for the convention's interactive real ear measurement sessions chaired by Dr. Robert Sandlin.

Dr. Linda Thibodeau from the Callier Center at the University of Texas, Dallas will be the presenter. Kristina Frye and Jeff Pommier will also be helping out. Yes, it does conflict with the golf tournament, but you will get a lot of good information and CEUs from AAA and ASHA.

Whisper-If you are in the area and want to attend this session, you won't be turned away, even if you aren't registered for this meeting.

If you are going to be able to attend this seminar, please send an e-mail to Sallie Frye with the good news. If you want Linda to cover the testing of auditory trainers, mention it in the e-mail.

7. Demo Units Available
Two 6500-CX units are available. One is at a 15% discount, the other 10%.
A couple of people have expressed interest in them, but there is no firm P.O. so they are still available.

Two or three FP40s are also available at a 10% discount.

8. Instructional Video or CDs
Frye has gone digital with their instructional videos. If you have to change a PROM on the FONIX 6500-CX to get a new program, you will be sent a free CD that can be accessed on your computer which will help you through picture and sound. Another short CD for those who are upgrading their FP35s is also available. They may also be made available as traditional videos if there are enough requests.

9. Rentals of 6500s and FP40s Available
For some time, Frye has been making their units available as rentals. Perhaps, you have a short term project that doesn't justify buying a unit. Give them a call. They can usually help you out.

10. New Coupler for Song Bird Hearing Aids
Frye has designed a custom coupler for the Song Bird disposable hearing aid. It is an HA-1 modified to accept the rubber tip of the Song Bird.

The Part No. is 044-2031-01. Price: $95.00.

Dave Preves of the Song Bird company has tried it out and approved it. This way you can perform a quick check of the aid or actually run it through all of the ANSI tests.

11. Spanish Language Translation
FA-10 Hearing Evaluator
Operator's Manual

Thanks to Frye's Mexican representative, Comaudi, they have a very fine translation of their audiometer operator's manual. You may download it off the web site: www.frye.com (click on 'manuals') or you can purchase a hard copy for $15.

Frye has the current version of all of their operator's manuals on their web site. If you want an earlier version, it is available for sale. Specify the software version to get the right manual.

12. Long-Promised Booklet Now Available
Linda Thibodeau's revision of Frye's booklet, 'Testing FM Systems and Auditory Trainers with FONIX FP40 Analyzers' will be posted on Frye's web site. Go to www.frye.com and click on 'Manuals.' Those who have requested copies will receive them in the mail. Sorry for the delay.
