WHAT: ACI Alliance published a new blog, An Octogenarian’s Cochlear Implant Journey, following the process of an 82 year-old man who thought he wasn’t a candidate for a cochlear implant. Through information provided by his audiologist, the man realized he should pursue a cochlear implant. The blog follows his medical and audiological evaluations, the surgery, and early outcomes. It is a warm-hearted story of hearing lost and found. https://www.acialliance.org/blogpost/1644925/An-Octogenarian-s-CI-Journey
WHY: Cochlear implants provide life-changing benefits for people of all ages. Age is not a contraindication for cochlear implantation. Additionally, appropriate candidates do not need to be completely deaf. People with more residual hearing (who are still candidates), on average, derive the greatest benefit. Insurance coverage is available for appropriate candidates under Medicare.
WHO: American Cochlear Implant Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to cochlear implantation through research, advocacy, and awareness. Its members are otolaryngologists, audiologists, speech pathologists, educators and others on cochlear implant teams as well as parent and consumer advocates.
