New President to Lead Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists

Ottawa, ON - The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) is pleased to announce the election of speech-language pathologist (S-LP) Gillian Barnes to the position of president.

A graduate of the University of New York, Plattsburgh, with a Master's degree in speech-language pathology, Gillian is a speech-language pathologist at the Movement Disorder Clinic at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With more than 20 years of experience as an S-LP, she has worked with populations of all ages and various disorders. Prior to her work at the Movement Disorder Clinic, she worked with individuals with neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders secondary to stroke and head injury at the Health Sciences Centre and Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg.

In addition to participation at the national level, Gillian has been actively involved with the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA) for a number of years. She has served on a variety of MSHA committees including public relations, administrative documents and the convention committee. Shewas chair of the discipline committee and served as the provincial association's president from 2005 to 2007.

Gillian believes the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology are both exciting and rewarding. She notes, "I still get excited about my profession after 21 years." She is proud to be part of an organization that "values its members and the people we serve." Gillian is an extremely committed individual, whose leadership skills, straightforward approach, compassion and desire to explore new avenues will serve the national association well.
