New Oticon Dual Designed Inside and Out to Deliver Spatial Sound and Wireless Connectivity in a Sleek, Small Shell

Somerset NJ, October 23, 2008 - Beauty or brains? Dual, a new high tech hearing device by leading hearing solutions manufacturer Oticon, is a unique synergy of high performance technology and aesthetic appeal. Dual solves the "beauty or brains" dilemma that has long challenged hearing care professionals, and frustrated individuals with hearing loss looking for ideal solutions. Introduced today, Oticon Dual is the first hearing device designed to give people with hearing loss a full inventory of high-end audiological features in a stylish and discreet micro BTE.

"Dual is unmatched in the desirable small design segment. Now, people no longer have to choose between small scale 'beauty' and big performance 'brains' when seeking a hearing device," states Oticon President Peer Lauritsen. "Dual offers users the performance they need and the stylish, modern design they want in a range of choices, all based on Oticon's advanced ultra fast RISE platform that delivers more bandwidth, significantly higher levels of processing power and wireless connectivity."

Dual Benefits Appeal to Both New and Experienced Users

New Dual appeals to first-time users who have previously resisted hearing devices. The instrument's stylish design sparks interest and opens minds, shifting focus away from hearing problems to discussion of hearing solutions and their benefits. At the same time, Dual provides the level of performance and range of features and benefits that more experienced users require ll in a highly desirable "fashion" hearing device.

Dual's extended 10 kHz bandwidth and binaurally co-ordinated compression between instruments delivers a sound quality unmatched by any other hearing device. Linking two Dual instruments into one binaural system enables Dual to surpass bilateral fittings that can make only ear-based decisions. Wireless communication between Dual instruments preserves the natural acoustic cues the brain needs for optimal spatial awareness and a closer-to-natural sound picture.

"Using binaural processing, binaural synchronization and binaural coordination, Dual provides the acoustic cues needed to distinguish subtle differences in sound intensities and the direction of sound origins," explains Lauritsen. "The resulting spatial awareness enables users to easily prioritize and 'zoom in' on a particular signal of interest - even when competing sound is louder than that signal. This greatly enhances everyday listening by making it easier and faster for Dual users to orientate themselves, especially in challenging acoustic environments."

Dual enables users to once again enjoy television at a level that won't drive others out of the room and to speak on landline or mobile phones without fear of embarrassment from whistling or feedback. The sleek and stylish hearing solution virtually eliminates feedback with a new and improved dynamic feedback cancellations system. A new AutoPhone feature allows Dual to automatically switch to dedicated phone programs for an enhanced listening experience.

With the optional Streamer device, users can wirelessly connect Dual to their television, home phone or cell phone with just the touch of a button. The signal is instantly transmitted to both ears. For users who desire more control, the Streamer can function as a remote control to easily adjust volume, switch to phonecoil or select up to four different listening programs.

The Dual Family offers superior design and technology in two series and at six price points. The Dual Connect Series features wireless connectivity and includes the Dual XW, Dual W and Dual V. Dual Connect provides wireless access to Bluetooth-enabled communication and entertainment devices through the optional Streamer companion device. The Dual Mini Series that includes Dual m9, Dual m7 and Dual m5 offers the superior sound processing advantages of the RISE platform in a tiny 10A size shell.

Dual is housed in a robust single shell construction with no hinges. The shell's nano-coating helps keep Dual moisture- and corrosion-free. The new instrument uses less power than most other receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) instruments, giving wearers up to 140 hours of battery life from a standard 312 battery.

New Dual will be available exclusively through hearing care professionals beginning in November.
