December 18, 2008 The Fall 2008 issue of NIH MedlinePlus magazine features a special section, titled "Focus on Communication," which highlights research of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The section commemorates NIDCD's 20th anniversary, which took place in October 2008. NIH MedlinePlus is a quarterly magazine of the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.
The special section includes articles that present personal perspectives on newborn hearing screening, cochlear implants, balance disorders, smell disorders, voice disorders, and other related topics. Also featured is NIDCD's new education campaign against noise-induced hearing loss, It's a Noisy Planet. Protect Their Hearing. The cover story includes an interview with author Lee Woodruff, wife of ABC news anchor and reporter Bob Woodruff, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in Iraq. Ms. Woodruff offers a candid view of how the family has been able to cope with Mr. Woodruff's injury and also the hearing loss of their daughter, Nora.
