New Change Guide Supports Implementation of Ida Tools to Foster More Patient-Centered Practice

NAERUM, DK February 22 -- Ida Institute today introduced the Change Guide to assist clinicians in fostering the changes required to successfully apply the Ida tools in clinical practice. The newest addition to the Ida Toolbox provides a five-step process that employs a combination of step-by-step change activities, videos, case histories and reflective exercises to support the change to more patient-centered care.  The online tool is designed for use by clinicians who want to begin working with the Ida tools in their daily client interactions or who wish to introduce the tools to colleagues or staff in a clinical setting.

The Change Guide tool represents the collaborative thinking of hearing and healthcare professionals from around the world who participated in Ida Institute’s 2012 “Managing Change” seminar.  The three-part seminar series explored the realities facing audiologists, barriers to change, and strategies to move ahead.

“Clinicians are already powerful change agents in their day-to-day interactions with clients and other professionals. They help people focus on their strengths and use those strengths as they learn to live with their hearing loss,” says Ida Institute Managing Director Lise Lotte Bundesen. “In a similar way, the Change Guide builds on individual and group strengths to facilitate integration of the Ida tools into daily practice.  Our worldwide Ida network of clinicians and educators tell us that when used in clinical settings, the Ida tools can affect positive change to more patient-centered care that benefits client and clinician.  The Change Guide can help to start that change journey for anyone who wants to begin working with the Ida tools.”

The Change Guide is based on an appreciative approach to change.  Rather than take a top-down, problem-focused approach to change, the Guide helps professionals reflect on and talk about what works well now and how to do more of that in the future.  In step-by-step exercises, professionals are shown how to define what helps and hinders change in their clinical environment and prioritize the action steps required to successfully implement the Ida tools and become more patient centered. The appreciative approach is already used by major healthcare organizations around the world to create change.

Experts in hearing healthcare and appreciative change management who collaborated with Ida Institute in the development of the Change Guide include: Adam Beckman, BSc, MSc, is the Head of Audiology Services at the Plymouth (UK) Hospitals NHS Trust and President of the British Academy of Audiology; Theresa Chisolm, Professor and Chair, Communication Sciences and Disorders Department, University of South Florida; Berth Danermark, Ph.D. is Professor of Sociology at The Swedish Institute for Disability Research, Linköping University and Örebro University; Louise Hickson, Ph.D. is Professor of Audiology, Head of School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Co-Director of the Communication Disability Centre at The University of Queensland; and Sarah Lewis, Managing Director of Appreciating Change, a consulting company focused on change management and business psychology.

The Change Guide tool is available free of charge at idainstitute.com, as are all of the tools in Ida Institute’s comprehensive Tool Room.
