Share:
Deaf Girl Amy Sargent lost her hearing in her late twenties. She spent well over 5 years on a challenging journey becoming acclimated to being a deafie, and has lived as one for over fifteen years.

Rochester, New York (USA)- July 21, 2011 - "A Survival Guide for New Deafies" by Deaf Girl Amy Sargent, is a witty, insightful quick read. It is designed to provide hearing people with an understanding of hearing loss and deafness, as well as insight and coping skills to newly deafened people or those hard of hearing people who fall somewhere in between.

Amy was a hearing person, working as a broadcast technician at a television station when deafness struck her. Learning that her diagnosis was progressive hearing loss and no longer being able to work as a broadcast technician, she went back to school to learn American Sign Language and to pursue a new career as a technology teacher. She also became a hearing aid wearer.

Deaf Girl Amy has lived through the hell of losing her hearing, including all the angst and self-doubt that accompany hearing loss. She fully understands the frustration and anxiety that it causes both the person with hearing loss and his or her family members. Having survived all the adversity and finding herself on the other side, filled with peace, joy and lightness, she wants to share what she has learned to spare those new to the life of hearing loss.

"A Survival Guide for New Deafies" is a must read for anyone affected by hearing loss, whether it's the person suffering from the hearing loss or a family member. According to Deaf Girl Amy, "This book is a comfy blanket making you feel safe in the new world. The survival guide is filled with practical often not thought of advice that is simple to implement into your life. The top ten rules for new deafies have a major immediate impact on your quality of life when you use them. "

The book offers Do's & Don'ts for family and friends, The Pro's of being a Deafie, De-mystifying Audiograms, and a unique story about living with deafness.

Deaf Girl Amy is also launching a grass roots campaign to help eradicate the stigma of wearing hearing aids and cochlear implants and to de-mystify deafies. "We wear hearing aids or cochlear implants to hear. Just like people wear eye glasses to see. It's not rocket science!" The campaign slogan is "Flaunt Your Bits & Pieces!"
