New Board Members Join the AFA

Lafayette, IN -The Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) appointed three new directors to its board during a Nov. 12 meeting in St. Charles, IL. The new board members, Charles Stone, Au.D., Parry Heide, B.S.E.E., and Michael Thelen, Au.D., assumed their board duties as of Jan. 1, 2006.

Dr. Charlie Stone is the founder of ESCO, an industry leader in providing loss and damage insurance for hearing devices. He is a founding member of the Minnesota Academy of Audiology, as well as its current president, and is an ADA and AAA member. He maintains a professional interest in working to improve the viability of audiology as an autonomous profession through proactive legislative and political means.




Parry Heide of Madison, WI, holds a degree in electrical and computer engineering. He has over 25 years of experience in medical product design and development, including international expertise. He will bring an outside perspective to the board that will prove invaluable, and is familiar with audiology issues as his spouse (Dr. Veronica Heide) is a private practitioner.




Michael Thelen has been a practicing audiologist for 27 years and owns Audiology and Hearing Services, Inc. in Appleton, WI. Dr. Thelen attended the ADA Conference on Professional Education in 1988, which launched the Au.D. movement, and earned his Au.D. from the Arizona School of Health Sciences. He is a member of AAA and ADA, and served eight years as the audiologist on the Hearing and Speech Examining Board of the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing. He is also a past president of the Wisconsin Alliance of Hearing Professionals, and was voted Wisconsin's "Audiologist of the Year" in 2004.

Richard Burba, M.B.A., and Tom Morris, Au.D., have fulfilled their terms of board service and have transitioned to the AFA Advisory Committee, along with three new advisory committee members: Brad Ingrao, Au.D.; Coral Jud, Au.D.; and Mary Anne Larkin, Au.D. Four advisory committee members, Peggy Blum, Au.D., Larry Englemann, Au.D., Gregory J. Frazer, Ph.D., Au.D., and Richard E. Gans, Ph.D., have completed their terms of service.
