Never Work a Day in Your Life

This month will be my six year anniversary with AudiologyOnline. Those of you who know me, know that I am a passionate person - whether it comes to my work or personal interests. I can honestly say that after six years I have never been more excited about being a part of AudiologyOnline. There’s a saying, “When you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life." Thank you for your support of our content and courses, which keeps me from having to go to work every day. Here are some of the latest happenings on the site.

Auditory Fitness for Duty

20Q with Gus Mueller logoThe mission of the Department of Defense Hearing Center of Excellence (HCE) is to heighten readiness and continuously improve the health and quality of life of service members and veterans. It seeks to do this through advocacy and leadership in the development of initiatives focused on the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, rehabilitation and research of hearing loss and auditory-vestibular injury.

In this month’s 20Q with Gus Mueller, HCE’s Chief Scientist Dr. Doug Brungart discusses efforts in researching standards for auditory fitness for duty. As audiologists, we know that the audiogram is not a good predictor of how our patients perform in the real world. How then, can we possibly determine if someone’s hearing will suffice for military service, or police work, or firefighting, based on tests we conduct in our offices? And more importantly, how can we protect their hearing once they are on duty? This article opened my eyes to the complexity of these issues as well as to the brainpower and resources that fortunately are being devoted to it. Thanks to Dr. Brungart and Dr. Mueller for bringing this article to AudiologyOnline.

Auditory Assessment of the Blast-Exposed Patient - Save the Dates

In June, we’ll host a series of webinars on the topic of auditory assessment of the blast-exposed patient, presented in partnership with the Defense Hearing Center of Excellence supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense. We are increasingly seeing patients in our clinic who have been exposed to blasts and many of you have asked for clinical guidance. We are honored to host an elite group of clinicians and researchers with a broad scope of expertise to help us explore the many facets of this important topic.  Course registration is now open, with more details to come.

Infection Control

Speaking of outstanding presenters, also in May, Dr. A.U. Bankaitis will present two new courses on infection control.  These courses will help us tackle the day-to-day realities of protecting ourselves and our patients as well as complying with laws and regulations.

New Products

I think every leading manufacturer has released new hearing aids or amplification technology in the past month. Stay up to date on the features, benefits, and software to ensure you have all the information you need to make the best clinical decisions for your patients and your practice.
