NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR HARD OF HEARING PEOPLE NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Share:

Bethesda, MD - John L. Jaco of Alexandria, Virginia, has been named as executive director of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, Inc. (SHHH), the nation's largest consumer organization for hard of hearing people. He will officially assume the title and duties of his position on October 18, 1999, when he will join the staff at SHHH National headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.

The selection of Mr. Jaco was made by the SHHH Board of Trustees on the recommendation of a seven-member SHHH National search committee that considered more than 50 applicants during this year. The committee was charged with the responsibility of conducting a national search for a new executive director to continue the proud tradition established by Howard 'Rocky' Stone, who founded the organization 20 years ago. The Board of Trustees is pleased to appoint a new executive director who will guide SHHH into the new millennium as SHHH strives to improve the quality of hard of hearing people's lives through education, advocacy, and self help.

A graduate of California State University, Jaco has more than 18 years experience as a chief executive officer in the non-profit sector, working for organizations such as United Way and the American Counseling Association. His work experience and background are in the areas of management, marketing, fundraising, strategic planning, public affairs, human resources, and establishing new and innovative programs.

Because of his own hearing loss, he brings a uniquely personal insight to, and experience with, hearing loss and its impact. Upon joining SHHH Jaco commented, 'My greatest satisfaction is to know and realize that I have contributed to building a better life for people. I am looking forward to working with the board of trustees, SHHH members and National staff in making society more accessible to people who are hard of hearing.'

SHHH is a non-profit, education organization, dedicated to the welfare and interests of people of all ages who do not hear well. For information on membership, the bimonthly publication, Hearing Loss, annual conventions, publications, and other programs, contact:
