Every July, we invite Dr. Brian Fligor to organize and host a series of seminars on noise induced hearing loss (NIHL), and he's put together another dynamite series for 2012. Thank you, Brian!
Carolyn Smaka and Brian Fligor catching up at AudiologyNOW!
I think what I enjoy most about this series is the diverse group of presenters and perspectives that is represented. This year's series features Dr. Fligor, industrial hygienist and researcher Dr. Rick Neitzel, attorney Paul Morenberg, and clinical audiologist Dr. Cory Portnuff.
Dr. Neitzel recorded the first course in this series, entitled It's a Noisy World, Holistic Perspective of Noise Burden on Urban Populations, where he discussed a recent study of noise exposures on people who live/work in New York City. Among the conclusions were:
- 9 out of 10 people who live/work in NYC are at risk for NIHL
- Simply riding mass transit puts 1 out of 10 people at risk for NIHL
- Use of hearing protection is low across all noise sources

20Q: More Highlights from MarkeTrak
In the July 20Q, our Question Man continues the conversation with Dr. Sergei Kochkin regarding highlights of 25 years of MarkeTrak research that was started in the June 20Q. This month, their discussion digs deep into financial factors that affect whether consumers will/won't get hearing aids, and what professionals can do to impact hearing aid satisfaction. Read this month's 20Q here, and browse the complete collection in the 20Q Archives.
Fostering Self-advocacy in Elementary-Aged Students with Hearing Loss Cochlear's HOPE series of seminars is designed to help cochlear implant recipients achieve best outcomes. You can view the series here. This article and text course is a transcript of a popular HOPE seminar that provides specific strategies to help school-age children learn to be self-advocates.
