Hello everyone and glad to have you on board for the AudiologyOnline Monthly Review! Before we dive into the content we currently have on the site, I do want to put my wholehearted support behind keeping laud in the NU6 word list. This is despite the current actions of the ISCRM as mentioned last month's AO email newsletter.

20Q: Hearing Preservation with Cochlear Implantation
Yes, the words "hearing preservation" and "cochlear implantation" can be mentioned in the same title. Dr. Gus Mueller had the 20Q "Question Man" sit down and talk with Dr. René Gifford from Vanderbilt University. Among other things, they found that 20 questions was not enough to talk about everything they wanted to cover! After you read through this month's article, we invite you to join the conversation. Submit your questions on this topic to Dr. Mueller at 20Q@gusmueller.net (or you can post them to our Facebook Page) and they just might be included in next month's 20Q!
A Patient Assisted Fitting: Introducing SoundPoint
The iPod and iPad devices are revolutionizing how we interact with computers in almost every way imaginable. That said, I doubt that Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, could have forseen that one of the most popular applications for these devices would revolve around shooting birds at pigs, aka, the infamous Angry Birds app. Likewise, I doubt that when considering medical applications for the iPad, Steve Jobs had hearing aid fittings on his radar. Luckily, Starkey Laboratories did, and you can read the article by Drs. Valentine and Dundas to find out more.
Otoscopes
What is one of your favorite clinical tools/tests/procedures? The Stenger test? The insert earphone? Maybe even the VU meter? I like the otoscope, as it improves other procedures that you perform. This includes everything from tympanometry, to ear impressions, even to checking if a receiver tube is clogged with wax . I like to think of it as an "audiologist's machete". This transcript of the live presentation by Dr. A.U. Bankaitis (who can cut through any excess rhetoric with machete-like presenting skills) of Oaktree Products takes you through all the things you need to consider when selecting an otoscope for clinical use.
Using Speech-in-Noise Tests to Make Better Hearing Aid Selection Decisions
We have another edited transcript of a live event from one of our regular contributors, Dr. Brian Taylor of Unitron on speech-in-noise (SIN) tests as a part of the pre-fitting process. Among other things, he walks you through all the related acronyms (HINT, WIN, QuickSIN, BKB-SIN, CST, SPIN, ANL, PPT) and helps you consider what SIN you should consider (not commit) in the clinic.
