Miss Washington State 2002 Visits AG Bell

Share:

Miss Washington State 2002, Amanda Beers, will visit the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) on Monday August 26, 2002. In September 2002, Miss Beers will compete for the crown of Miss America 2003.

Miss Beers attended Columbia Basin College where she studied music theory and composition. She plans to write music and teach piano upon graduation in 2004.

As an individual with a hearing loss, Miss Beers has chosen as her platform: Supporting the Hearing Needs of Children. She states: "I am committed to being an activist and advocate for the infant whose hearing loss has yet to be detected, for the child who cannot afford a hearing aid, and for the young deaf or hard of hearing student unable to receive a quality education."

AG Bell and the Deafness Research Foundation will co-host a reception in honor of Miss Beers from 5 pm - 7 pm.

For over 100 years, the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, an international membership organization, has promoted spoken language options for children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. AG Bell members are parents, professionals, and individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. In keeping with the philosophy of its founder Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, the Association believes that those who are deaf and hard of hearing should be identified early, educated as to their ability to speak or continue to speak, benefit from comprehensive intervention, and thereby be able to participate fully and independently in the mainstream of American life. Services include educational materials and programs for families, professionals, and individuals, leadership training for college and high school students, scholarships, a magazine and professional journal, and related activities. Founded in 1958, the Deafness Research Foundation (DRF) provides private funding for basic and clinical research in hearing science and for education projects on hearing loss. DRF has launched the National Campaign for Hearing Health, a multi-year public education, government relations, and advocacy initiative to ensure that all Americans- especially children - benefit from the dramatic invitation that promise to increase options for those living with hearing loss. By advocating for detection, prevention, intervention, and research, the Campaign promotes a lifetime of hearing health for all Americans: babies, children, teens, adults, and seniors.
