Noted Chinese dissident poet can hear again after visit from 'The Santa Claus of Hearing,' William Austin
(August 25, 2004) Despite being told by medical experts that he would never fully regain his hearing, acclaimed poet Er Tai Gao can now hear again due to the amazing work of William Austin. Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Hotel, Austin, head of the Starkey Hearing Foundation and President of Starkey Laboratories, fitted Er Tai Gao with special devices which have restored his auditory senses.
The outspoken Er Tai Gao had been brought to Las Vegas due to the efforts of Glenn Schaeffer (head of Mandalay Bay) and his Institute of Modern Letters, which is the world's foremost group working to rescue persecuted writers.
William Austin, the head of the Starkey Hearing Foundation, heard about Er Tai Gao's situation, and volunteered to try to help him. When Austin first put the preliminary hearing devices in, Er Tai Gao began laughing uncontrollably for minutes, his beaming smile bright enough to light up the whole city. After decades of silence, he could hear!
The indefatigable William Austin of the Starkey Hearing Foundation not only heads Starkey Laboratories, but he goes on global missions to fit with hearing aids underprivileged children -- giving away an astounding 20,000 hearing aids each year and helping earn him the name "The Santa Claus of Hearing."
The Institute of Modern Letters has already rescued several prominent authors from around the world. Founder Glenn Schaeffer's tireless efforts have helped get an all-star board of advisors to help in the cause, with names like Salman Rushdie, Gore Vidal, Sting, Paul Newman and James Ellroy to mention but a few.
