I’m excited to share some great resources with you this month, including our new 20Q by Dr. Catherine Palmer as well as some suggestions for how you can raise awareness about audiology and hearing loss during Better Hearing Month.
Review of Hearing Aid Research 2013
The latest 20Q is a great review of hearing aid research from 2013 from none other than Dr. Catherine Palmer, a preeminent hearing aid researcher, audiologist, clinician and professor. It is a clear, straightforward write-up of handpicked journal articles from 2013 with take away messages spelled out for clinicians. It is a must-read for anyone fitting hearing aids, unless of course, you personally read all 100 hearing aid journal articles that were published last year. Thanks to Dr. Palmer and Dr. Mueller for this excellent resource. Now that I don't have to read all those journals, I can get started on season 2 House of Cards - or promoting Better Hearing Month!
Better Hearing Month is here!
It’s the time of year when we focus our efforts on raising awareness about audiology and hearing loss. AudiologyOnline is proud to support two ASHA-led campaigns developed in an effort to spread the word about communication disorders to the public.
The Identify the Signs campaign is a national effort of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) designed to combat an overall lack of awareness about communication disorders—a major barrier to treatment for millions of Americans. The campaign’s primary purpose is to educate the public about the warning signs of communication disorders and the need for early identification and intervention. I had the opportunity to speak with Joe Cerquone from ASHA about this program, and how audiologists can get involved - you can read the interview here.
The International Communication Project 2014 (ICP) is a collaborative effort developed by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologists, Irish Association of Speech & Language Therapists, New Zealand Speech-Language Therapists Association, Royal College of Speech Language Therapists, and Speech Pathology Australia. The project is built on the premise that although healthy communication is vital to the quality of life, communication disorders are largely overlooked as disabilities.
There are numerous ways that we can increase awareness and educate families and caregivers. Share your knowledge, spread the word - not only during this month but throughout the year.
