Ottawa, ON - Canadian leaders in speech-language and hearing are being honoured for contributions to the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology at an awards banquet of the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, April 18, 2008.
The CASLPA Awards Program has a rich history dating back to 1976 when the first Award for Distinguished Service was presented to Robert Coulling of the Elks. Since then, more than 345 individuals have been recognized in 12 categories. The individuals that have been honoured have set high goals and achieved much in their professional and personal lives.
2008 recipients are being recognized in each of the following categories: Mentorship Award, Editor's Award, Promotions Award, Award of Excellence for Interprofessional Collaboration, Consumer Advocacy Award, Isabel Richard Student Paper Award, CASLPA Certification Exam Award, and Student Excellence Awards.
The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologists (CASLPA) is the national voice of more than 5,000 professionals. A not-for-profit association, CASLPA supports the professional needs of its members, champions the interests of those who require speech, language, and hearing services and promotes awareness of how speech-language pathologists and audiologists contribute to the well being of Canadians living with communication disorders.

Mentorship Award
Awarded to a CASLPA member who has significantly influenced or contributed to the clinical training and/or professional development of a student(s) or colleague(s) in the field of speech-language pathology or audiology, either as a clinical supervisor or a mentor.
Catherine Mhun, Montreal, QC - Catherine currently works at The Summit School in Montreal, a school for special needs students aged 4 to 21. She has taught at McGill, given a wide range of conferences in French and English on intervention with intellectually-impaired children and created an autism interest group.
Promotions Award
Includes radio or television broadcasts containing educational information, e.g., talk shows, video training, and community cable or public information programs or other public awareness activities such as billboards, posters, special events, etc.
André Lafargue, Fredericton, NB - Andre is regional manager of audiology and speech-language pathology at River Valley Health, NB. His professional interest in the area of classroom acoustics began over 20 years ago when he sought ways to improve the listening conditions of school children under his care and who suffered from hearing impairments.
Award of Excellence for Interprofessional Collaboration
To recognize interprofessional collaboration and acknowledge the role that speech-language pathologists and audiologists play on interprofessional teams. The award is presented to an interprofessional team that has contributed/impacted/strengthened patient/client outcomes and/or the fields of speech-language pathology or audiology through their collaboration and teamwork.
The Preceptor Education Program for Health Professionals and Students, London, ON - This program provides community clinical educators/ preceptors with ongoing support in training the healthcare professionals of tomorrow. It is an interprofessional collaboration between the schools of occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, speech- language pathology, epidemiology and the information technology service at The University of Western Ontario, along with Fanshawe College and The Middlesex London Health Unit.
Editor's Award
Recognizes the best paper published in the Canadian Journal of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology within the calendar year. CASLPA membership is not a requirement.
Julie Hughes, London, ON and J.B. Orange, London, ON - "Mapping functional communication measures for traumatic brain injury to the WHO-ICF", Volume 31, No. 3, Fall 2007
Julie Hughes is a speech-language pathologist and the professional practice leader of speech pathology and audiology at St. Joseph's Health Care London, ON. Julie is currently conducting research in the area of functional communication in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
J.B. Orange is an associate professor and the director of the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Western Ontario. His current research projects include the analyses of language, discourse and conversation of individuals with Alzheimer's disease, aphasia, frontotemporal lobe dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Consumer Advocacy Award
Awarded to an individual (or group) that is not a speech-language pathologist or audiologist, but has made an outstanding impact on the profession(s) by actively and significantly advocating on behalf of individuals with communication disorders.
Colin J. S. Cantlie, Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, Calgary, AB - Colin, over the span of 2 decades, has forged powerful inroads for those with disabilities and contributed to numerous community initiatives. His personal experience with hearing loss has fueled his true passion - to promote disability awareness.
Certification Exam Award
Awarded to the CASLPA member in each profession who attains the highest score on the certification exam. The winner is determined by CASLPA's Standards Advisory Committee.
Catherine Norsworthy, S-LP, Montreal, QC - Catherine graduated from McGill University's School of Communication Sciences and Disorders with an MSc (A) in Speech-Language Pathology in 2007 and since has worked at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital and the Rich Rewards Child Development Centre.
Jordon Geddes, AUD, Vancouver, BC - Jordan is a recent graduate of the University of British Columbia's School of Audiology and Speech Sciences. She began her career working for the Calgary Health Region and is currently working in private practice at Ears Hearing Clinics in Vancouver.
Isabel Richard Student Paper Award
Presented to a CASLPA student member for the best paper written on a specific topic related to the professions. Papers are judged on both style and content.
Julianne Tenhaaf, London, ON - Julianne Tenhaaf is currently enrolled in the University of Western Ontario's speech-language pathology program. She has participated in intra-operative language mapping research for epilepsy patients undergoing temporal lobectomy surgery.
Gurjit Singh, Toronto, ON - Gurjit Singh is currently a doctoral candidate in the department of psychology at the University of Toronto. He received his MA (psychology) from the University of Waterloo and a MSc (audiology) from the University of Western Ontario.
Christine Comeau, Saint John, NB - Christine is currently completing her Master's degree at Dalhousie University's School of Human Communication Disorder with a concentration in speech-language pathology. She works through the School of Human Communication Disorders providing individual and group therapy for oral and written language to individuals with acquired brain injuries.
Student Excellence Award
Awarded to a CASLPA student member, in their graduating year of study, in each of the S-LP and audiology training programs in Canada. Nominees are judged to be the best all-round future professional, shall have shown significant enthusiasm for their profession and have instilled in others a desire to contribute to the development and growth of S-LP or audiology. Selection is based on a peer nomination process.
