2013 Heuser Symposium will bring health experts to Louisville area.

Louisville, Ky. (March 20, 2013) — We have all experienced dizziness, but some people experience that faint, unsteady sensation constantly. For people with vestibular issues, their world is continuously off-balance.

The Heuser Hearing Institute of Louisville will host a symposium focused on vestibular issues in children and adults on September 21. The conference will feature the latest information and studies in children and adults with vestibular issues.

The vestibular system detects movement and gravitational pull, and it provides information regarding the position of the head as well as acceleration and deceleration of movement. The system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance and eye movements. The vestibular system impacts nearly everything we do.

A recent study estimates that as many as 35% of adults aged 40 years or older in the United States—approximately 69 million Americans—have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), a further 4% (8 million) of American adults report a chronic problem with balance, while an additional 1.1% (2.4 million) report a chronic problem with dizziness alone.

The symposium guest speakers will include Dr. Joel Goebel of Washington University’s School of Medicine, Dr. Devin McCaslin of Vanderbilt University’s Hearing and Speech Department, Dr. Richard Gans of the American Institute of Balance, Dr. Gary Jacobson of Vanderbilt University’s Bill Wilkerson Center, and Dr. Gaye Cronin of Atlanta Ear Clinic.  All of the speakers are involved in research and study at the cutting edge of finding answers to vestibular problems.

The event will be held at the Heuser Hearing Institute on September 21. Register online at https://www.thehearinginstitute.org and click “On-line Registration Now LIVE-click here.”

The symposium costs $80.00 for participants and is free for students. Late registration after 8/1/2013 costs $125.00.

CEU credit for participants is pending approval. More information is available by contacting Mary Burton at 502-584-3573 or e-mail at mburton@thehearinginstitute.org.
