John Stanton, Esq., chair of AG Bell's Public Affairs Council and 2014 recipient of the organization's highest honor, the Honors of the Association Award, has just been published in the peer-reviewed UCLA Entertainment Law Review. The article titled "Why Movie and Television Producers Should Stop Using Copyright as an Excuse Not to Caption Song Lyrics," addresses a very important accessibility question for people who are deaf and hard of hearing: are movie and television producers on firm legal ground by invoking copyright as a basis for refusing to caption song lyrics? Citing the example of The Wizard of Oz, the article answers with a resounding "no" by looking at two recent cases from federal courts and aims to end the practice of not captioning song lyrics so that viewers who are deaf and hard of hearing have full access to feature presentations.
