Ultra-low power technology positions AMIS as wireless audiology solutions expert
Pocatello, Idaho - July 5, 2006 - AMI Semiconductor (NASDAQ: AMIS), a designer and manufacturer of state-of-the-art integrated mixed-signal and structured digital products, today announced that it has been selected by Interton, a leading hearing system manufacturer, to develop advanced wireless capabilities in hearing aid devices through an ultra low-power radio frequency (RF) subsystem.
Adding wireless technology to modern hearing devices is a complex challenge given the battery life expectations of users. This added complexity escalates the requirement for the signal processing and wireless communication hardware within the hearing aid to be tightly integrated so that it can operate with extremely low power consumption and high fidelity.
Christian Gormsen, Managing Director of Interton commented on the selection of AMIS as their semiconductor partner by stating, "AMIS has clearly demonstrated expertise in ultra-low power wireless technology for implanted medical devices, and we are quite familiar with their advanced digital signal processing technology for hearing aids. Based on their diverse expertise and proven track record, selecting AMI Semiconductor's RF solution with the critically-important low-power attribute was a logical choice."
"Our relationship with Interton is a further demonstration of our total customer solution expertise for the evolving needs of the hearing aid market," said Todd Schneider, vice president of AMI Semiconductor's medical and wireless business unit. "Interton has always been at the forefront of launching innovative products, and we look forward to helping Interton integrate even greater functionality into their hearing aid devices without compromising on battery life."
The RF and signal processing subsystems will be packaged in a hybrid assembly supplied by medical microelectronics supplier, IntriCon Corporation (Resistance Technology Inc.). IntriCon will also offer a version of the RF technology to hearing aid manufacturers who require "ready-to-go" solutions.
