(ROCKVILLE, MD-September 20, 2005) Integrity in research in scholarly publishing will be the focus of a September 22-23 symposium at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), when participants will identify and prioritize the major issues, challenges, and knowledge gaps facing the communication sciences and disorders community.

Sponsored by ASHA and the Association of American Medical Colleges, the symposium, "Enhancing Integrity Throughout Research: A Summit on Publication Practices, Responsible Authorship, Manuscript Content, and the Peer Review Process," will bring together more than 30 leading researchers and faculty.

The meeting will be the first phase of a two-part project that aims to further responsible conduct of research within ASHA as well as the discipline of communication sciences and disorders. The second phase of the project will include the development of resource materials for those who engage in scholarly publication, those who educate and mentor future researchers, or those who serve on boards and committees charged with recommending and developing ASHA policies and guidelines.

"Responsible development, review, and dissemination of research in the discipline of communication sciences and disorders are of paramount importance to the Association," ASHA President Dolores E. Battle, PhD, CCC-SLP observes. "Data from recent ASHA surveys on research integrity issues as well as the anecdotal information we have gathered from publishing our four scientific journals have provided us with a strong foundation for this project."

Additional agenda items for the September symposium include publication practices, responsible authorship, manuscript content, and the peer review process. The participants will also evaluate resource materials and make recommendations to further develop or enhance materials in the scholarly publishing area.

ASHA is the national professional and scientific organization for more than 120,000 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists. Audiologists specialize in preventing and assessing hearing disorders as well as providing audiologic treatment including hearing aids. Speech-language pathologists identify, assess, and treat speech and language problems including swallowing disorders.
