Washington, D.C. Actor and bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno, popularly known for his role as The Incredible Hulk, sat down with American Cochlear Implant Alliance (ACI Alliance) Executive Director Donna Sorkin to discuss his lifelong hearing loss and why he went forward with a cochlear implant at age 69.
Lou Ferrigno has spoken previously about his hearing loss from childhood, how it affected him personally and professionally, and how he communicated using hearing aids and lipreading. In February 2021, he received a cochlear implant and has been open about how it has changed his life.
In late July, Lou sat down with Donna Sorkin to share his perspectives about overcoming challenges throughout his life. A friend’s recent success with a cochlear implant provided the impetus to explore one for himself. He spoke about using listening practice exercises to improve his CI outcomes.
There is no age limit for cochlear implants in adults, and research has shown that cochlear implants improve the quality of life for eligible people—regardless of age.
ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit membership organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness, and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for patients of all ages.
