Jack A. Vernon, Ph.D. 1922 - 2010
On November 11, 2010, the tinnitus community suffered a profound loss and American Tinnitus Association lost its visionary, co-founder and good friend, Dr. Jack A. Vernon.
Jack is considered the "godfather" of tinnitus research. His interest in understanding tinnitus began in the late 1960s and led to the creation of the first clinical sound therapy that we all know today as "masking." His work inspired countless researchers and clinicians to follow his lead, developing many different forms of the sound therapies that help tinnitus patients get relief today. You can read more about this amazing individual in a special tribute ATA did in the August 2009 issue of Tinnitus Today by clicking this link.
In addition to his important research, Jack also welcomed calls from tinnitus patients every Friday, a testament to his caring nature and true concern for tinnitus patients. He helped many thousands of individuals over the course of his career and would always give them the good news that they didn't have to just "go home and learn to live with it."
Jack touched so many lives over the course of his and in such influential ways. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
If you would like to honor Dr. Vernon's life in a way that would be meaningful to him and his family, and would help continue his legacy, consider making a gift to the Jack Vernon Research Fund in his memory. You can do that by going to ATA's donation page, entering "Research Fund" as the "Type of Donation," and under "Additional Information" indicate that the donation is to be in memory of Dr. Jack A. Vernon. 100% of all monies raised will be restricted exclusively for tinnitus research. The complete tribute listing for Jack will be published in the Spring 2011 issue of Tinnitus Today and available on ATA.org.
