A variety of hearing industry disciplines were represented at the two-day conference including physicians, audiologists, speech therapists, engineers, lawyers, psychologists and educators of the deaf.  The conference also invited members of the hard of hearing community to participate in a number of the conference sessions.  Similar to the Ida Institute, the Mutualidad de Argentina de Hipoacúsicos (MAH) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with hearing loss.  MAH serves more than 40,000 people throughout Argentina.

Ida Concepts and Tools Translate Well

Conference participants were predominately Spanish-speaking and the Ida team relied upon translators to communicate during the two workshops and discussion session.   “The translation went very smoothly,” said Bundesen. “But what was most gratifying was how clearly the concepts and the tools we presented ‘translated’ to the participants.  It reaffirmed for us the universal application of the patient-centered approach and the importance of engaging and motivating clients to address their hearing loss.”

Bundesen also noted the strong and positive response to the Institute’s ethnographic videos that provide a glimpse into everyday encounters in real-life clinical and home settings.  “Despite the need for translation, the videos very obviously resonated with the conference participants,” she said.  “In one of our workshops, we also had number of people with hearing loss and they too had a positive response to the interaction and discussion depicted in the videos.”

The ability to engage both hearing care professionals and clients in discussions brought an added dimension to the Ida workshops.  A  Mind Map of the Living Well concept incorporated the perceptions of hearing care professionals and people with hearing loss, creating a unique collaborative experience that resulted in new thinking and insights for both groups.

“At Ida Institute, we focus on collaboration as a way to facilitate active engagement to address the challenges hearing care professionals experience in everyday practice,” said Gregory.  “The MAH Conference created an exciting, new opportunity to gain input from the patient side of the hearing care equation.”
