Featured Session on "Group Aural Rehab" Offered at eAudiology

Naerum, DK March 7 - Ida Institute staff and faculty from around the world will collaborate to give audiologists and audiology students participating in this year's AudiologyNOW! Conference a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the non-profit institute's innovative collaborative approach. Three separate educational sessions focusing on the Institute's patient-centered philosophy, methods and tools will be offered at the annual conference of the American Academy of Audiology in Chicago, April 6-9.

"We welcome this opportunity to introduce audiologists from across the U.S. to the 'Ida way' and its potential to affect a paradigm shift in audiology to more patient-centered care," said Ida Institute Director Lise Lotte Bundesen. "It is well accepted that counseling is a critical variable in the successful rehabilitation of people with hearing loss. Through our educational offerings at AudiologyNOW!, we aim to help facilitate a movement away from an over-emphasis on technology to a more balanced approach that results in positive change for patients and audiologists."

A three-hour Featured Session entitled "Group Aural Rehab: It's Worth It, We'll Show You How!" will showcase the benefits of audiologic rehabilitation groups and guide participants through the steps necessary to develop and implement a successful program. Lead by Ida Institute faculty members Jean-Pierre Gagné, Ph.D., Université de Montréal, Jane Madell, Ph.D., Pediatric Audiology Consulting, Joe Montano, Ph.D., Weill Cornell Medical College, Jill Preminger, Ph.D., University of Louisville and Sam Trychin, Ph.D., Penn State, The Behrend College, the session will provide guidelines for managing a Group AR Program and discuss practical considerations such as payment/reimbursement and measuring patient benefits and satisfaction.

To expand the reach to audiologists around the world, the three-hour session will be available on Friday, April 8 from 2:00-5:00PM CST via a live webcast on eAudiology, the Academy's online educational forum. The session will also be available on demand at eAudiology.

"Living Well with Hearing Loss" presented by Ida Institute faculty members Jean-Pierre Gagné, Ph.D. and Patricia McCarthy, Ph.D. , Rush University, will explore how audiologists typically define the concept of "living well with hearing loss" and assess whether their own concepts match those of patients. Practical Ida-developed tools will be demonstrated and an ethnographic video obtained from recent international anthropological field work will provide the basis for contextualized learning and group discussion.

The third educational offering, a hands-on workshop conducted by Ida staff members Kirsten Lauritsen and Melanie Gregory, will focus on "Self-Development in the Clinical Setting". Participants will be introduced to several Ida Institute-created tools that facilitate development of patient-centered skills to enhance the clinical encounter for both clinician and patient.

Throughout the conference, Ida Institute tools and materials will be available at the Ida Institute exhibit #1321. For more information about Ida Institute, visit idainstitute.com.
