HIA filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to formally support a proposed rulemaking that would amend the definition of an auditory assistance device (AAD) to allow such devices to be used by anyone at any location for simultaneous language translation. HIA also emphasized the importance of cooperation with FCC to address future needs for new operating spectrum in support of AADs for people with hearing loss. HIA noted that these emerging spectrum needs will be determined in part by the changing electromagnetic environment of these bands, integration of voice and data services, and the need to offer the benefits of technological development to the hearing loss community. HLAA, in conjunction with other hearing health organizations, had earlier filed comments in support of the petition.
