Happy Better Hearing Month!

To support you and your clinical practice this month, we have two pretty important articles featured on AudiologyOnline.

Get HIPAA Compliant - Again

The first article discusses new changes to HIPAA for 2013 and beyond.  As Dr. Kim Cavitt puts it, “The moral of the story with the new HIPAA requirements is that you need to update almost everything for 2013.”  There are civil and criminal penalties for failure to comply, but fortunately, Dr. Cavitt has put together this great resource to help you get started.  A big thanks to Dr. Cavitt for bringing this to AudiologyOnline so that you can access this important information for free and at your convenience.

Great Power, Great Responsibility

Susan Scollie PhDFrequency lowering technology can help restore audibility.  That’s powerful.  The responsibility is ours to know when and how to use it, with whom and what mistakes to avoid.  The new 20Q with Gus Mueller article by Dr. Susan Scollie addresses clinical considerations for fitting frequency lowering technology.  It’s the perfect companion piece to last month’s frequency lowering review by Dr. Josh Alexander, 20Q: The Highs and Lows of Frequency Lowering Amplification (as a side note, congratulations to Josh on the news of his pending patent!).  We’ll top off this topic next month with both expert authors discussing some open questions. Then, you can dive into product-specific frequency lowering courses from leading manufacturers in our Course Library with new insight, and perhaps even better outcomes.

As always, you can earn CEUs from reading these articles as well as from 1200+ other live, recorded, audio and text courses with AudiologyOnline CEU Total Access for $99/year.

Big Industry News

When I conduct interviews for AudiologyOnline, it makes me excited to be an audiologist again during these dynamic times.  After all, I remember way back when, as a clinical audiologist, I was visited by a sales rep who told me that the first programmable CIC was about to be launched.  “A programmable CIC?  What for?” I asked, thinking it was a sales gimmick.  “Just imagine,” my rep said, “it’s as if you’ll have four trimpots on a CIC!”  Back then, that was BIG news.

Fortunately, today there is much bigger news from industry, including:

AudiologyOnline interviews are a great way to get to know the faces behind the companies you work with, and to get a convenient overview of their new products and initiatives.  To dive deeper, you can browse courses, and access resources and contact information for these companies on their AudiologyOnline Expo Pages.

Summer Lovin’

I’m lovin’ our summer live webinar line up.  We have some great things in store including an Electrophysiology Webinar Series organized by Dr. Jay Hall and a Noise Induced Hearing Loss Webinar Series organized by Dr. Brian Fligor.  As we head into fall and back to school, we'll have a Back to Basics series organized by Dr. Maureen Valente.  Stay tuned.

Gus Mueller cooking

And speaking of summer, I can't think of a better way to get in the mood for the impending season than by making this audiology-approved bbq bacon shrimp recipe.  Bon appetit!

Thanks as always for your participation and support of AudiologyOnline!

Best regards,
