Hair Cell Regeneration

On Friday, July 23, 2004 (1-3 pm. Eastern time), Drs. Brenda Ryals and Douglas Cotanche will discuss their ground-breaking research into hair cell regeneration in birds and the implications it may hold for the future practice of audiology.

Understanding the cellular, genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying hair cell regeneration in birds may lead to new therapeutic approaches in the mammalian inner ear. This presentation will review the mechanisms of cell cycle and cell death that are fundamental to hair cell regeneration. The presenters will provide current information on the potential of stem cell research and genetic manipulations, which may provide an impetus to hair cell regeneration in mammals. Finally, the presenters will explain the influence of regenerated hair cells on the restoration of complex auditory perception and vocal production and discuss potential clinical implications of this work.
