LIVONIA, MI - August 29, 2011 - The International Hearing Society (IHS) announced today that Massachusetts State Rep. John Scibak(D-South Hadley) will be present to welcome convention attendees and recognize them for their dedicated efforts in helping the hearing impaired during the opening keynote lunch on September 15, 2011, at the 60th Annual IHS Convention & Expo.
Rep. Scibak is a longtime advocate for the hearing-impaired community and is the lead sponsor of H.325, a bill which would provide hearing aid insurance benefits for Massachusetts residents. In addition to Scibak's participation at the convention, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino have also extended personal greetings to IHS convention attendees.
"We are very pleased to have the IHS convention in Massachusetts this year for the 60th Annual Convention," said Peter Lee, President of the Massachusetts Hearing Society, an IHS affiliate chapter. "Once we heard the convention was coming to Boston we made the decision not to hold our chapter's annual meeting but rather integrate it with the IHS event. The quality of education offered is impressive and many of our members are looking forward to participating."
IHS also announced that the Massachusetts Hearing Society has been selected to receive the well-respected chapter of the year award during the diamond anniversary awards gala on Saturday, September 17th. The chapter has played an important role in hearing aid legislation, including working directly with Rep. Scibak to develop a strategy to get hearing aids covered by insurance. Additional awards will be announced and presented during the awards gala including The Hearing Journal's Joel S. Wernick Dispenser in Education Award, The Hearing Review's Professional Leadership Award, and the IHS Lifetime Achievement Award, to name a few.
