Schaumburg, Ill., March 2, 2005 - GN Otometrics, the world leader in hearing and balance diagnostic systems, is launching a new training course on infant hearing loss. Entitled, "Infants with Hearing Loss: Assessment and Intervention," the course will provide audiologists, and other hearing healthcare professionals, with the latest information on diagnostic and habilitative procedures for the infant population.
The two-day course, to be held in downtown Chicago on June 9 and 10, will be conducted by three leading clinicians with expertise in pediatric audiology: Robert Margolis, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Minnesota, Department of Otolaryngology; Sandra Abbott Gabbard, Ph.D., Director of Audiology, University of Colorado Hospital, and associate professor of otolaryngology at UCHSC; and Lisa L. Hunter, Ph.D., associate professor, Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Utah.
"The amazing growth in universal newborn hearing screening programs has created an increasing need for audiology services for hearing impaired infants and their families," said Dr. Margolis. "This training course will provide valuable insight and skills that attendees will be able to use immediately in their practices."
Day One of the course will address assessment of the pediatric patient and will include presentations on a range of topics including the impact of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) on audiology services and the patient community it serves; the auditory system, pathway and central processing in newborns; acoustic immittance and otoacoustic emmissions testing; auditory evoked potentials and behavioral assessment.
Day Two of the course will focus on intervention. The range of topics to be covered includes an integrated family-centered intervention approach; genetic, informational and family-adjustment counseling for the family of the young, hearing impaired patient; family-centered therapy and the audiologist's role in education.
"We think that a highlight of this course will be a discussion with parents of hearing-impaired children who have first-hand experience with the early assessment and intervention process," continued Margolis. "Their participation in this course should be helpful to all who seek to be better clinicians."
"Infants with Hearing Loss: Assessment and Intervention" can be taken for 1.1 CEU credits through AAA or ASHA. The course will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago.
