From The Editor: Who Moved My Cheesehead?

Editor's Note: This month's email comes from David Fabry, Ph.D., who is a new Associate Editor for Audiology Online. We are so pleased to have Dave as a member of our team and the email below will bring you up to speed on some of the collaborative efforts that we are working on with him. - Paul Dybala, Ph.D., President and Editor-In-Chief.

Green and Gold

I'm a lifetime fan of the Green Bay Packers, despite the fact that I have lived in "enemy territory", including the homes of the Vikings, Redskins and the Bears. Similarly, although I have worked in many different capacities during my twenty-five year career as an audiologist, I have always enjoyed the opportunity to work with people. For that reason, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to join the faculty at the University of Miami Medical Center. After years of working with hearing aids at Mayo Clinic and subsequently for Phonak Hearing Systems, I couldn't resist the temptation to challenge myself by "moving my cheese", by straying outside my professional comfort zone into the world of cochlear implants. Although my early professional influences include Dianne Van Tasell, Darrell Rose and Margo Skinner, who all had considerable talents both in the areas of hearing aids and with cochlear implants, the timing was never right for me to make the plunge. Miami offers the opportunity to join an established, well-regarded cochlear implant program while continuing with hearing aid research, clinic, and teaching responsibilities.

Audiology Online Associate Editor

I am also privileged to begin my tenure as an Associate Editor for Audiology Online. Although I have served as an Editor and Associate Editor in the past, I am particularly excited about the prospect of contributing to the website that serves as the online community for audiologists. The range of educational offerings, including live seminars, interviews, product reviews, debates, and opinion pieces is unparalleled in our industry, and I look forward to contributing in a variety of ways.

You Can Interact with Marion Downs

To that end, my interview with Dr. Darrell Rose afforded me the opportunity to review the professional accomplishments of one of my early mentors. In January, we will present a live event with Marion Downs, "Words of Wisdom from Marion Downs - A Perspective on Hearing In Children," who has impacted the lives of many audiologists and hearing-impaired children through her passion and dedication for pediatric audiology. I want to open up the conversation now, so send in any questions you might have for Marion to me via dave@audiologyonline.com - I will pick the best ones to use during the live event.

Around the Web and Until Next Month

In sum, I am delighted to join the team at Audiology Online, and I look forward to "moving the cheese" at light speed - or at least that of the average cable modem. Before I forget, please take a look at the other AO news and information links to the right of this message and be sure to visit the "Around the Web" feature at the bottom of this page.

Happy Holidays

On behalf of everyone here at Audiology Online, we want to wish you the very best holiday season. Audiology Online President and Editor-In-Chief, Paul Dybala, will be back next month to ring in the new year!

Best regards,

David Fabry, Ph.D.
