From The Editor: First Day of Summer!

Share:

Dear Colleague,

First Day of Summer! June 21st is the first day of summer and with that comes summer vacation and kids having time off from school. If you work with children, that may mean that you might not see some of your "kids" for a few months, but I know that means you haven't forgotten about them!

If you work with kids, we have a few things from our Contributing Editors in Pediatric Amplification that I would like to suggest as "Summer Reading". (HATs Aren't Just for Adults: Improving Communication Access in Childhood by Dawna Lewis), Ph.D. from Boy's Town. The Seven Habits of High Effective Audiologists Who Serve Children by Linda Thibodeau, Ph.D. from the UT Dallas / Callier Center. You can also view a recorded course by Dr. Thibodeau on Tools for Successful Use of FM Systems in Schools.

With Summer Comes Mosquitoes You may have heard about a device out of the UK dubbed the "Mosquito". The Mosquito is a device used in public areas to send out annoying signals in the 15-20 kHz range. The frequency range is supposed to be high enough to annoy teenagers, while being inaudible to the presbycusic thresholds of adults. The idea is to keep teens from congregating in certain public areas. Some innovative teens have sampled the high-frequency sounds and created ring tones for their mobile devices. Why? They can now be alerted for phone calls and text messages without parents and teachers being any the wiser! Find more information about this and other related hearing topics in our regular news feature, Around the Web in 60 Seconds.

Contributing Editors: Finally, I wanted to mention the latest feature on AO from one of our expert Contributing Editors. Gallaudet professor, Steven Ackley, Ph.D., published an article on VEMP titled, Auditory and Vestibular Evoked Potentials Assessment in Clinical Practice and Research. The article contains an overview and some case studies, so I would encourage you to take a look. Please feel free to view the latest AO news and information links listed to the right of this email and as always, thanks for reading.
